Classical lineage. Living practice. The body as a tool for knowing.
It is a complete system for training the mind through the body. The word yoga means union, the integration of body, breath, and mind into a single, coherent instrument. It originates in classical Indian philosophy, most directly the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and long predates the fitness-studio version most people encounter first.
Asana, the physical postures, is one limb of an eight-limbed system that also includes breath
control, ethical discipline, concentration, and meditation.
The asana practice is the door. What's behind it is a complete system for understanding the relationship
between self and world.
In a city that treats the body as a machine to optimize, yoga treats it as the entry point to something more
interesting: an examined mind.
Jivamukti is a living lineage that takes classical Indian philosophy
seriously and applies it to the
conditions of modern urban life. The practice acknowledges that we are embodied creatures
in
a fast, loud, demanding world.
Expect a clear sequencing logic that moves you toward a specific
peak posture, anatomically grounded alignment cues, Sanskrit terminology taught with context rather than
decoration, and a closing meditation that isn't tacked on but is the actual point of the physical practice
that preceded it. Expect your
effort to be intellectual as well as physical.
No prior experience is required. This is not a restorative,
close-your-eyes-and-relax class. If that's what you're looking for on a given day, we will make appropriate
adjustments to the sequence; or perhaps my meditation
sessions are the better fit. If you want a practice that treats you as someone capable of understanding
what you're doing and why, this is it.
Classes are available in-person in NYC and online. My weekly public class,

"The body is not the obstacle to liberation. In Jivamukti, it is the path."
What is Jivamukti yoga?
Jivamukti is a method that teaches asana alongside the rest of yoga's eight-limbed system: breathwork, Sanskrit, meditation, and philosophy, as one integrated practice rather than a workout. It takes classical Indian thought seriously and applies it to modern urban life. Expect clear sequencing toward a peak posture, grounded alignment, and a closing meditation that's the actual point, not an afterthought.
Do I need experience or to be flexible?
No to both. Sessions begin wherever you are, and no prior experience is required. Flexibility is a result of practice, not a prerequisite for it. Postures are met with alignment cues and adjustments suited to your body on the day, so you work at your own level rather than someone else's.
How is this different from a studio or gym yoga class?
Most studio classes teach asana as fitness, detached from the tradition it comes from. Here the physical practice is the door to a complete system: Sanskrit is taught with context, philosophy is part of the class, and the intellectual effort matters as much as the physical. If you want to understand what you're doing and why, that's the difference.
How much do yoga classes in NYC cost?
Private in-person classes range from $155 to $205 depending on length; online classes from $100 to $150. A limited number of reduced-rate community spots are offered each month for those who need accessible pricing. Full pricing is listed in the classes above.
Is yoga taught privately or in group classes?
Electric Sutra is built for people who want private, one-on-one yoga instruction, in-person in New York City or live online. Each class is tailored entirely to you: your body, your level, and what you're working toward, at a depth a group room can't offer. For those who also enjoy a shared practice, Annamaria teaches a weekly public pranayama class at SOUK Yoga Studio in Manhattan.
What should I bring or wear?
Comfortable clothing you can move in, and a mat if you have one. For online classes, enough space to extend fully in each direction and a device positioned so you can be seen and adjusted. Everything else is guided in the session.
Asana deepens alongside breath and stillness. Many students pair it with pranayama and meditation as part of a fuller practice.
